You may be wondering - how do you create a wetland? One way is to create a series of dams in the river, slowing the water flowing downstream, holding back sediment and nutrient runoff. The surface water spills into shallow ponds (called 'scrapes') in the surrounding areas. The result? Less pollution and flooding downstream, and more homes for wildlife! The Wisconsin Wetland Conservation Trust, a DNR wetland mitigation program, recently completed a wetland mitigation project within the Evansville State Wildlife Area in Rock County.
