The opening of the salmon ladder at the Nimbus Fish Hatchery has been delayed. Operators with the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife called it a "water management issue" in a post on Monday. I spoke with the US Bureau of Reclamation which manages water for the Lower American River by way of Folsom Dam and Nimbus Dam. Following the opening of the Nimbus Hatchery fish ladder last week, hard-working CDFW staff began spawning fall-run Chinook salmon on Monday, November 10. On that day, 146 salmon were spawned and approximately 423,360 eggs were collected and fertilized. These eggs will begin hatching in late December and the fish produced will be released as smolts this coming spring.
