Today marks the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year. How many hours of daylight you'll see today, depends on how far north or south you are. Hobart, for example, will only get about 9 hours of daylight, while Darwin will see about 11.5 hours. Since the March equinox, the tilt of Earth's axis has been angling the southern hemisphere further away from the Sun. During the winter solstice the Sun sits as far north as it ever gets, directly over the Tropic of Cancer. The good news is that

Winter officially arrives tomorrow (Dec. 21, 2025), with the solstice! The winter solstice — the moment when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the Sun. Because of that tilt, the Sun stays lowest in the sky and we end up with the shortest amount of daylight and the longest night of the year.
