On this day in 1944, Paris was liberated from the Nazis. The French occupation began on May 10th 1940, with Paris falling to the Nazis a month later, when the French government left the capital city. Although the French government moved to Unoccupied Free France (i.e. Vichy) and never officially joined the Axis, its leader Philippe Pétain worked in collaboration with the Nazi administration.
