#Parihaka On this day in 1881, more than 1500 armed Crown troops invaded the Taranaki settlement which was a peaceful resistance to the confiscation of Māori land. Several thousand Māori sat quietly on the marae as singing children greeted the force which led to the arrest of Parihaka’s leaders Tohu Kākahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai. Much of the village was destroyed and the inhabitants were dispersed. 137 years on from the invasion and months after reconciliation with the crown, the day remains a

Hītorī The Legacy of Te Whiti-o-Rongomai: The December Stand for Peace at Parihaka In early December 1881, the people of Parihaka were living through one of the darkest chapters in their history. Only weeks earlier the Crown had invaded the peaceful community, arrested its leaders and torn through homes and crops. But in the weeks that followed, Te Whiti-o-Rongomai continued to guide his people with a message that would influence generations: peace, discipline and dignity in the face of violence

#PARIHAKA The tale of Parihaka has come to life with a new musical based on the 1881 invasion of the Taranaki village and it’s aftermath. The way of the Raukura tells the story from the perspectives of convicted felon Wiremu Hiroki and reporter Samuel Crombie Brown, who was an eye witness of the invasion by colonial forces. | Te Ao Māori News

On November 5, 1881, when a force of over 1,500 armed constabulary and volunteers invaded the settlement of Parihaka, they were met not with force, but with a community seated calmly on the marae, and singing children who offered the soldiers food and water. This peaceful reception was a powerful display of their commitment to non-violence in the face of an armed invasion. Te Whiti-o-Rongomai and Tohu Kākahi led one of the world's first sustained campaigns of original, non-violent, passive resis

Parihaka led a social movement of peace and unity, welcoming everyone from Maori to Tangata Tiriti who sought refuge from violence and injustice. It modeled manaakitanga & whanaungatanga, leading from a place of moral courage and compassion. We must look to such examples when setting out our kaupapa, values and policies. We must uphold the same vision set out by Tohu & Te Whiti that if honoured at the time would’ve set a completely different path for Aotearoa. Te Pāti Māori are committed to this

Controversial Destiny Church leader, Brian Tamaki, has been copping criticism in the past week for allegedly using the iconic status of Parihaka to promote one of his campaigns. Many have requested the material be removed. Reporter Te Rina Kowhai spoke to two people who have links to both sides: both were raised at Parihaka and have been Destiny Church members for more than a decade. | Te Karere
