This piece challenged me from the start — I’d chosen the wrong paper! Hot press instead of my usual cold press, so the paint wouldn’t flow or blend. What was meant to be a simple sketch became a mixed-media battle of perseverance. But I couldn’t give up. I felt I owed it to Satao — to finish, however imperfectly — in memory of a giant who died for trinkets. His death changed me. It’s one of the reasons I now donate much of my work to help conserve elephants, rhinos, and other African wildlife. I
