Are we over training our young horses and under developing them? I’m not saying don’t train young horses but focus more on exposure to things while training the basics! We worry too much about getting the colts to do perfect pivots, smooth stops, spins fast backs, whatever. In other words we’re expecting a finished horse in a green colt. Like somehow having the perfect maneuver will create a safer horse. To make a safer broke or finished horse you must develop a colt to accept life around them.

This isn’t about training……I was just happy to still be able to climb on a tall horse. By the way I’m kinda liking this horse (who happens to be looking for a new pasture). | Enck's Training LLC

Some have asked about our noise pit. Basically we notched and screwed 4 posts together and filled it with empty plastic bottles. It has been a very good obstacle to acclimate to noise as well as feel. | Enck's Training LLC

Trying to figure out the gait of this horse😳. He’s getting into his gait a lot easier the more miles we put on him. Love all the different kinds of horses we get to work with. I’ve been around most of the breeds at some point in my life. I’ve learned something from all of them. One thing I’ve discovered is that “a horse is a horse”. Regardless of what breed they basically work off the same instincts and principles. | Enck's Training LLC

This don’t seem like much but it took about 30 mins of my life to achieve. What doesn’t seem like much can be the thing that helps solidify the relationship with your horse. Confidence needs to be built in both you and your horse. Struggles will always pop up and be faced. It’s how you handle them that strengthens or weakens the relationship! | Enck's Training LLC

He tries. He has a lot of talent yet doesn’t fully believe in himself. Not sure where his journey will lead him but am so thankful that he has the horses(ponies) to help him prepare for wherever the journey leads him. | Enck's Training LLC

How you lead a horse, in my opinion, can determine how well they’ll handle riding. And it has nothing to do with them. They’re horses just being horses. But if you can’t get them to walk freely with you without blowing by you or lagging behind or stopping when you stop then you have already proven to the horse you’re not the leader and they have no reason to listen to you. If you can’t properly lead a horse and have them respect you during this simple task why would you think that they will resp

This is a classic maneuver when a horse tries to buck. Stop hard and start right back up where you left off. Even though he said he didn’t stop him he instinctively did he just didn’t realize it. Pony didn’t try it again. This is just one of many ways to get past these little protest hops. | Enck's Training LLC

I’ve never seen a winter like this! If we aren’t careful people may start moving here. We need a good ol’ fashioned blizzard to remind people of why they don’t want to move here😳🤷♂️! | Enck's Training LLC

First time at tie area! I just wrap the rope and brush them. By just wrapping the rope he can move around as long as he just pulls the rope but doesn’t pull it off I just keep shortening back up and continue. If he picks it off he gets reprimanded and right back to the board. | Enck's Training LLC

Some have asked what can they do with there horses in the winter. Well CT is only a 1.5 yr old and I just occasionally do some random groundwork( stand still until asked to move, lunge, move front and hind ends, and back). But even your 20 yr old can benefit from this. Work on those problems you had this summer by doing some basic groundwork. Who knows you may just find your horse is capable of more than you think! | Enck's Training LLC

When hand feeding your horses many wonder how to determine if they’re feeding enough. I like to see a little hay 3 hrs after feeding. At 6 hrs there should be crumbs to nibble on. The horses may holler at chore time but shouldn’t be pacing and over impatient. Again to determine this you will need to feed on a schedule. And feed them their requirements of around 2-/2.5% of body weight (more depending on work load and cold temps)That is total weight of feed/hay combined! Just what I’ve learned fee
