WASHINGTON, July 13 (Reuters) - Federal officials on Sunday defended President Donald Trump 's escalating campaign to deport immigrants in the U.S. illegally, including a California farm raid that left one worker dead, and said the administration would appeal a ruling to halt some of its more aggressive tactics.

The Trump administration argued the deployment was necessary to deal with chaotic protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the removal of 2,000 National Guard troops from Los Angeles.

"Thanks to our troops who stepped up to answer the call, the lawlessness in Los Angeles is subsiding," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
