"An asteroid this size impacts Earth on average every few thousand years and could cause severe damage to a local region," the European Space Agency said.

The asteroid is hurtling towards us at a zippy 15,000 miles per hour, according to the space agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

While the asteroid's possibly collision with earth wouldn't be until 2032, there's been a lot of talk about the possibility in recent weeks.
