Protesters gathered outside Georgia's parliament in Tbilisi for the third consecutive night, expressing anger over the delayed EU membership

Thousands of people gathered in Georgia's capital Tbilisi on Saturday for a third night of protests against the government's decision to postpone European Union membership talks until 2028.

Mass protests against the pro-Russian government have broken out in major cities across Georgia, despite police attempts to disperse demonstrators, the Georgian outlet Sova News reported on Nov. 30. The protests were sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze's decision to postpone Georgia's accession to the European Union until 2028.

Georgia’s interior ministry has said that 107 people were arrested during Friday’s protests in the capital Tbilisi sparked by the government’s decision to delay the former Soviet country’s bid to join the European Union.

Protesters gathered across Georgia on Saturday (November 30) night in a third straight night of demonstrations against the government’s decision to suspend negotiations to join the European Union. Masked police in riot gear fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons at protesters as clashes broke out outside parliament in Tbilisi.

The State Department also condemned the “excessive use of force by police" after thousands of Georgians protested the halting of EU accession negotiations.

"Georgian Dream’s various anti-democratic actions have violated the core tenets of our U.S.-Georgia Strategic Partnership ... As a result, the United States has suspended this mechanism."

The US Department of State has announced the suspension of the strategic partnership agreement with Georgia. This decision is in response to the mass protests in Tbilisi that erupted after the ruling party,
