In the wake of the recent fire at Vistra Corporation's Moss Landing Power Plant and Energy Storage Facility, the California Public Utilities Commission has proposed new standards for battery energy storage facilities.

Nickel, cobalt and manganese, found in lithium-ion batteries, increased dramatically at Elkhorn Slough after the fire.

State regulators want more control over how battery storage facilities operate as SJSU researchers have found a large amount of heavy metals in the soil following the Moss Landing Power Plant fire.

Monterey County supervisors on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in response to last week's major fire at the Vistra lithium battery plant in Moss Landing.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to enact a proclamation of local emergency related to the Vistra Energy fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant that started Jan. 16,

"Fortunately no one was hurt," said Board Chair Felipe Hernandez. "But this event has left a lot of questions in the minds of many and I think a lot of questions for our board as well as they make future decisions.

These are very disturbing numbers,” said County of Monterey Supervisor Glenn Church. “… We’re in uncharted territory.”

Monterey County residents near a Moss Landing power plant were ordered to evacuate Thursday night after a fire broke out at the facility.
