President Donald Trump's administration on Tuesday proposed revoking a scientific finding that has long been the central basis for U.S. action to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.

The Trump administration’s goal is to roll back rules limiting planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, vehicles and oil and gas production, but it could backfire for industry.

On Tuesday the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released its proposal to undo its long-standing rationale and legal mandate to regulate greenhouse gases under the decades-old Clean Air Act—part of the Trump administration’s wide-ranging campaign to dismantle federal efforts to combat climate change.
