The Republican-controlled state House in Texas has passed new congressional maps that aim to pad the party’s majority in Washington by as much as five seats in the midterm elections, a move that comes as battles over redistricting spread across the country.

Local elections officials had expressed concerns about the cost of implementing a last-minute special election.

Democrats and voting rights advocates have denounced the redistricting effort, which is designed to give the GOP five more seats in the U.S. House.

Gavin Newsom's redistricting effort took a big step forward with Democratic lawmakers back in session this week to try and get the bill on the November ballot. Monday, California Democrats and Republicans held dueling press conferences at the California State Capitol.
