WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday proposed revoking a scientific finding that has long been the central basis for U.S. action to regulate greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.
Three environmental groups are suing the EPA, asking a judge to order the agency to reassess its regulations on the chemical.
Funds in Springfield were planned to go toward a variety of environmental programs, including air pollution monitoring, green job training, providing homes with more efficient windows and roofs, abating mold in homes and improving air conditioning in a city library.
“EPA must step in and protect our communities and drinking water from the carcinogens, radioactive material and other dangerous substances that go hand-in-hand with oil and gas waste,” Mall said.
Under sue-and-settle litigation, an increasingly common method of federal environmental rulemaking, an environmental lobbying group sues an agency–say, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The agency settles the suit, leading to hundreds of billions of dollars in new regulations annually. The costs fall not on the parties to the lawsuit, but on states and regulated entities.
