Webb's ability to see through hazy obstacles is demonstrated here with the Sombrero, aka Messier 104, a nearly edge-on spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. The galaxy was discovered in 1781 by the French comet hunter Pierre Méchain, one of renowned astronomer Charles Messier’s colleagues.

A brand new image snapped by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveals the intricate details of the core of the distant "Sombrero Galaxy." This galaxy, officially known as Messier 104 (M104), is situated some 30 million light-years from our planet.

The Sombrero galaxy, which is about the size of the Milky Way, is positioned some 30 million light-years away. The Webb telescope has several different instruments, but most of the widely shared images you've seen come from an infrared imager known as NIRCam.
