Sony/Marvel Studios' "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has broken a record once believed to be unreachable, passing the $936 million unadjusted total of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" to become the highest grossing film in the history of the U.

Still, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on the verge of another record. Its weekend gross brought it over $935 million domestically, meaning it's less than $2 million away from topping Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens ($936.6 million) as the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office (which includes the United States and Canada).
