The New York Mets completed a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Winners of four straight games, New York sits atop the National League East with a 15-7 record. One of the biggest reasons for this has been star first baseman Pete Alonso.

After a lengthy contract dispute with the Mets, Alonso ended up signing a two-year deal worth $54 million with an opt-out. His performance this season and Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s recent 14-year, $500 million extension couldn’t be coinciding at a better time for the slugger.

Pete Alonso drove in two-thirds of the Mets’ runs in Saturday’s win over the Cardinals at Citi Field, where again he carried the offense.
