The US Environmental Protection Agency is considering scrapping a landmark almost two-decade old legal opinion that greenhouse gas emissions are harmful to human health, the Washington Post reported.

The proposed rule rescinds a 2009 declaration known as the “endangerment finding,” which scientifically established that greenhouse gases endanger human lives.

Environmental advocates, elected leaders and workers at the Environmental Protection Agency gathered at Federal Plaza downtown Monday to push back against the president’s reported plans to repeal a key federal determination that allows the EPA to help combat climate change.

While Trump has infamously mocked climate change as “a great hoax,” the ICJ unanimously declared that international law obliges “the protection of the climate system."

Environmental advocates say cutting the EPA's research office could have dire effects, especially when it comes to climate policy.
